AMSA Global Health Conference 2008

The AMSA GHC is fast approaching. It is shaping up to be a great event and one not to be missed! - visit http://amsa.org.au/ghc2008/ for more details.

Registration will open for the 4th Annual AMSA Global Health Conference on Monday March 31 at 10pm AEST.

Last year in Adelaide, the Conference sold out in less than 12 hours. This year, with fewer than 400 positions available Australia-wide, it is likely that they won’t even last that long!

Conference registration and accommodation prices are once again low.

Four-day conference pass - $130
Includes Thurday’s workshop program and three-day social and academic conference pass.

Four-day academic and accommodation pass - $290
Includes all the above plus accommodation for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

‘08 Launch Event, “Postcards from around the world”

Join us for our launch event for 2008 as we go around the world with students and faculty as they share their recent global health experiences. From outback Australia, our journey will take us through the Pacific, up to Asia, India, across to the Middle East and back through Africa!

The evening will involve a range of short postcard presentations from students and staff in the school of Medicine and the school of International Public Health. It will be a great opportunity to find out what great experiences could lie ahead in your academic years and possibly beyond!

• Eastern Auditorium, University of Sydney
• Light refreshments will be provided

All welcome

The event will be co-hosted by globalHOME (with support from the MedSoc) and the Faculty of Medicine.

East Timor - international health forum

The challenge of change.
Come and hear about some of the current initiatives underway to assist this fledgling nation’s unique challenges:

• 47% of the population are under 17
• it’s among the 10 most poorest nations
• has almost no functioning health system
• it has one of the highest birth rates in the world
• approx 80% of children are infected intestinal parasites.

Dominic Bowen, of Australian Aid International (AAI):
Dominic will talk about the unique challenges Timor-Leste faces and AAI’s involvement. AAI is an Humanitarian NGO particularly active in emergency responses.

Dr Kevin Baker, an Australian Anesthetist:
Dr Baker present his experiences in Timor-Leste over the last few years and an insight from his perspective - he has run trauma clinics in Timor.

Sue England of Cooperative Café Timor (CCT):
Sue will discuss some of the Maternal and Child Health issues facing
Timor-Leste. CCT is supported by USAID and Sue is their Maternal and Child
Health Advisor currently working in Timor-Leste.
