Projects
The following projects are being organised by Global HOME:
- Information Evenings: the first of these is scheduled for Thursday 10 August. Speakers are yet to be confirmed but the theme is “What, How, Why – Your Role in International Health”. It is envisaged that there will be three speakers who are at different stages of their careers in international health
- Social Events: an informal opportunity for students with an interest in international health to meet and exchange ideas, issues and inspiration
- Book Drive: students are currently approaching libraries, book shops and publishers to obtain books for hospitals and medical schools in developing communities. These will be distributed according to need via elective placements or other relationships formed between Global HOME and international organisations
- Aid for Elective Hosts: this is still a small-scale plan to provide needed items to hospitals where students are undertaking their elective terms. Currently two hospitals have been highlighted as requiring specific objects such as pulse oximeters and glucometers. Global HOME has been in communication with MSAP (Medical Student Aid Project from UNSW) for advice about this project
Structure
Global HOME held its first meeting on 5th April 2006 and there were 27 people in attendance. The group has adopted a non-hierarchical structure consisting of a Chair and Secretary with members adopting functional roles related to various projects. There is no official membership procedure with interested parties invited to join an online discussion group (usydinternationalhealth@yahoogroups.com). To join this yahoo group, please send an email to Michelle Nicholson at mnic6802@med.usyd.edu.au. Meetings are held at The University of Sydney on a monthly basis.
