Lecture series

The GlobalHOME lecture series is an annual event that runs from March to May. The aim of the lecture series is to educate and promote important global and local public health issues and the millenium development goals. Distinguished speakers whom are experts in their field of public health will come to the University of Sydney to share their personal experiences in working with communities, research, and what we can do as students to work towards improving these issues.

Maternal health workshop

The aim of the maternal health workshop is to educate students about the Millenium Development Goal number 5, to improve maternal health in developing countries. This workshop consists of talks and an interactive SCORPIO with leading professors and doctors in maternal health, and the assembly of birthing kits to send to developing countries via Birthing Kit Foundation Australia.

The 2011 maternal health workshop was held on the 19th of April, and welcomed speakers Prof Heather Jeffery and Dr Jane Hirst. The birthing kits assembled were sent to India.

 

Child health workshop

The aim of the child health workshop is to educate students about clinical paediatrics in developing nations, and to promote the MDG number 4, the improvement of children’s health worldwide.

The 2011 child health workshop was held on 28th of May. We welcomed speakers Dr Ben Marais, who spoke about tuberculosis and how the disease affects children in endemic countries, and Prof Kathryn Currow, who gave a talk on the impact of education in clinical paediatric healthcare, with a focus on case studies.
